Ghana Keyboards - About Us
About GhanaKeyboards
GhanaKeyboards is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to revitalising the interest in, and use of, Ghanaian languages, particularly in electronic forms, among Ghanaian youth.
Our Beliefs
This mission is motivated by the belief that Ghana has a very rich cultural heritage that is on the verge of extinction if not catalogued soon.
We at GhanaKeyboards further believe that Ghanaians are best-suited to lead the revolution to preserve Ghana's rich cultural heritage, both for the sake of posterity and to make it accessible to all who wish to learn more about Ghana, it's people, and its literary traditions.
Finally, we acknowledge that this is an arduous task that can be accomplished through creativity, dedication and hard work. Our unofficial motto "Nyalasi 'Ole, Wºlasi 'onºna," an Ewe adage which translates loosely as "knowledge seekers find wealth, but knowledge users keep it," reflects this belief in proactivity.
Our Mission
Working in an environment of creativity, integrity and mutual respect for all volunteers and affiliates without regards to ethnicity, race, gender, orientation, political leanings or religion, we strive to improve access to technology that will make it easy and possible to use Ghanaian vernacular on computers and other electronic devices. To accomplish this, we seek to do the following:
- Generate enthusiasm for the use of Ghanaian vernacular in various electronic forms: via email and chat as well as in articles, dictionaries and online literary repositories
- Encourage students at all education levels to read and write in Ghanaian vernacular through writing contests and the launch of an open online literary repository. While we hold the view that English must remain Ghana's official language for expediency and convenience, we also believe that Ghanaians must be encouraged to become fluent in the language(s) of their homeland.
- Form alliances with government agencies and educational institutes to incubate projects and programs that will drive this cultural revolution.
- Investigate and initiate projects that will make our success in Ghana replicable across Africa and other parts of the world that still lack the technological support that facilitates using one's native tongue in cyberspace.
- Continuously develop affordable, easy-to-use technology, such as winGlass, that will make all this possible.

Our Projects
Please refer to our projects page page for a list of projects that we are currently working on. We are undergoing organisational restructuring right now but will soon be looking for evangelists and volunteers who will help us achieve our goal of making the use of Ghanaian vernacular easy, fun and hassle-free.
